I know its un-related, but were you aware that a radio adaptation of "the ragged trousered philanthropists" is going to be aired on bbc4 this sunday at 15:00? If so, how come you didn't tell me?
The papers make tons of stuff up. We know that - there are heaps of signifiers for the fake stories too - eg, 'sources close to "insert celeb / politician / etc here" say...' - and so on. Yawn.
I NEVER read the papers for that very reason, one doesn't even know if one can believe photos anymore, (it just dawned on me that I havn't heard the phrase "the camera never lies", in ages). all we know is that gazza may, or may not be in a mental hospital, or somewhere else? A criticism of the papers for printing such turgid gossip, is more a criticism of the people who pay to read it! I assumed you wouldn't know, I might be wrong but you dont strike me as a typical radio 4 listener, I just thunk, (maybe wrongly) that you might be interested.
I don't think we can accuse all the papers of that...however, I suspect the vast majority use those tactics. Indeed - pictures can NEVER be trusted - think about Stalin!!
I dabble with Radio 4 occassionally but I'm not a fanatic! I might well tune in!

ever wonder that the papers make this stuff up, knowing that due to patient confidentiality, it's difficult to disprove it?
